Google Quick Search Windows in Q&A
How do I change Mozilla Firefox's default search engine from Bing to Google? When I first downloaded FIrefox, I was happy at how the place where you type the web address could also double up as a quick search engine. Just type in a phrase, click "enter," and you'd come up with Google searches. Recently I downloaded the new Windows Live Messenger, and with that the search engine turned from Google to Bing. I don't like Bing. Is there a way to turn it back?

Linkz replied: "http://www.firefoxfacts.com/2008/01/13/change-default-search-in-firefox/"

Angel replied: "I dont know if you have it but go to google search engine and then somewhere in the pannel above you can set it as youre home page"

Ashelleigh replied: "Go the top right corner of your screen where there's a search box. On my computer, I've got a picture of a magnifying glass. If you go next to the magnifying glass, or whatever you've got, click on the downfacing arrow next to it. It'll say Live Search (Default) and under that Bing. Go down to More Search Providers and click Google. Then check when you're done to see if it says Live Search (Default) Google."

Zavador replied: "I had a similar problem but with Ask rather than Bing. The answer lies in Mozilla's configuration page. To access the configuration you should open a new tab/window and type about:config into the address bar. You may then receive a warning that you could screw things up if you set any values improperly but just click ok. (its not a big deal as you can choose to reset all to default which means Firefox will revert to its initial installation state). The value you want to change is keyword.URL The page is alphabetical so scroll down and find this value then right click on it and select reset from the drop down menu. It's status should go from "user set" to "default" and you'll notice that before resetting it was some sort of redirect URL for Bing but the default is Google. You'll note that the messenger installation may have changed more than just this particular value (though I understand keyword.URL seems to be the one giving you trouble specifically). You may want to check the browser.search.* keys as well. Bold faced keys have been altered from the defaults and quite probably set to Bing, and you can reset these to change them back to Google if you please. Hope it helps, so far as I've seen there is information on Mozilla's help page pertaining to a default search engine (in the top right search bar) but nothing mentioning the address bar redirect that you want fixed, so it took a little hunting..."

Unexpected shutdown in Windows Vista? Alright, for whatever reason my PC restarted and when Windows loaded again I was greeted with a pop up saying "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" or something along those lines. I did a quick Google search, and unchecked the automatically restart box in My Computer -> Properties -> Whatever. How do I find out what is causing the problem and fix it?

Al replied: "The chances are its a hardware error which may be overheating or something, which is forcing the computer to reboot so it doesnt get damaged. There is a possibility it might be a virus but I think this would be unlikely. Try checking all the fans in your computer are working and cooling all the components."

DarkStanley replied: "Windows says it has recovered from an unexpected error every time you receive a blue screen of death. This most often happens due to driver related errors. You could try updating all your drivers. It worked for me one time. But if it doesn't happen again it was most likely a one time event, which sometimes happens as well. I was receiving a blue screen of death one time every time I was trying to change a network setting. I downloaded the latest chipset drivers for my motherboard and haven't had a problem since."

Should I be worried that I vacuumed a broken thermometer? I recently broke a thermometer and I tried to vacuum it up, but the mercury wouldn't go through the vacuum. I then did a quick google search on how to handle this and found out that you are never to vacuum mercury because it vaporizes it and releases more of the toxins into the air. Should I be worried that I tried to vacuum it? Is my kitchen a huge toxic zone now? I opened windows and let the air flow for 15 minutes but I am kind of worried now.

Diane B replied: "see if you have a bio hazard waste facility in your community. If you do give them a call and explain what happened. It may cost you some $$ but they may come out and check and also rid you of the mercury, as you just can't toss it in the trash."

Alan B replied: "Don't worry. You will be just fine. A vacuum will not vaporize the mercury."

Michael D replied: "It takes heat to vaporize mercury. If it had been vaporized you wouldn't be here now, it is very fast and deadly. It is also a hazard if you touch it. It is absorbed by the skin. Being a heavy metal it is bad for you. But you need a large dose to get sick because it needs to build up in your system. I also doubt it was mercury, most manufacturers don't use it any more."

PLEASE...URGENT!!! This question concerns Windows Live Messenger and the error code 8100030d when I sign in... I can no longer sign into Windows Live Messenger on my account, note that my second account that i did not sign up for this works fine, and i also use ZoneAlarm for my antivirus program and i USED TO have Windows Live Messenger BETA but upgraded which took away the BETA. When attepting to sign in with the troubled account i get the error code 8100030D. I haave done everything [well i have done all that i can and all that i know how to do] that they told me to do on their help page. BUT NOTHING HELPED! After some quick google searches it seems i am not the only one to have this problem. One person said they fixed it by "unenrolling" in the yahoo beta. But I can't seem to find where and how to do this. If anyone out there has a clue please LET ME KNOW! WHERE CAN I 'UNENROL' THE YAHOO BETA THINGY???

Hollywood's Doll replied: "me too!! what is going on about windows live!!!?"

Corned Beef replied: "ok,ok,............ummmmmmmm,be calm.......you've got about 15 minutes before tha sucka explodes into about 1,000.000.000 emoticons"

goffy replied: "in the mail box it says revert to previous."

Don't people know how to use Search Engines??? I mean; if you're in Yahoo Answers, you are on the internet. Why are people asking questions that a simple search in Google will give them the answer to? I answer questions all the time just by doing a quick search in another window, but it's getting rediculous!

spoof replied: "i know, but anyways more points for us."

Daniel L replied: "It's more fun this way"

thesweetestthings24 replied: "Because they can."

jv637 replied: "same here. but i like to know other possible answers too, not just what i had in mind. =) for example, one of my question was: can you name a holiday animal? most people say: easter bunny or reindeers, those were my two possible answers.. and then someone answered "turkey" ding ding.. it's cool & fun to read different reponses from people all over the world.. than to search the engines for the answers. =)"

miu miu replied: "because it's fun"

dave's fotowerks replied: "Google it and find out."

Jessica replied: "I always wonder the same thing i think people just like to ask questions that they already know the answers to."

Black Sabbath replied: "You can get first or second hand experiences from others."

RedCloud_1998 replied: "Most people do, but if they can get other people to do it for them ....... lol"

otherworldtrader@yahoo.com replied: "The same reason reason we are answering yours. Most of mine I like to answer without using a search engine. It's a good brain food or some of the questions are. Getting the points isn't the only reason we all participate."

MetallicaRule replied: "Jesus judy just give the gig up! here's me pretending to be all smart answering all these questions and you let people know how i do it, i hope you can sleep tonight girlie girl, because i sure won't be able to!"

Sandra replied: "No"

Solly replied: "You can't assume people asking questions genuinely lack the answer. Many are playing impromptu quiz-show host. Others, of course, are just ignorant - they fit your profiled user. If I had a nickel for every time I've read "how do I change my profile pic in answers" I'd be a wealthy man. I know people ask questions that could be answered using search engines, but I prefer to answer questions that require some form of subjective opinion, or interpretation. This keeps the frustration-factor associated with easily-answerable questions from getting tedious."

My Cat Oreo replied: "Yes, because this site is funner."

gogo69er replied: "umm nice page"

Whats happened to the sound on my computer? The other day I was playing the sims 2 on my computer. I typed in a cheat as I usually do, but now I'm thinking I must have hit something wrong on the keyboard because every since then, my computer has had no sound on it what so ever. I dont use plug in speakers, I just use whats built in to the screen, so its not that, but no sound will play at all. The jingle that plays when you switch windows on, my mp3s wont play any sound, nothing. I dont know what I've done or how to fix it. Can anyone help? Is there anything I can do? I've done a quick search on google and I've checked that the comptuer is not on mute, I've gone into the control panel > sounds and audio devices, and checked that everything (except microphone) is fine and not muted. Any ideas of what I can do? I'd rather not call a PC repairman out if I can try fixing it myself. Plus I'm thinking it must only be something trivial because up until I played that game, everything was working perfectly.

candiegurl256 replied: "well i don't know how to fix it but i would buy plug in speakers. other than that im not really sure."

William D replied: "Might check for drivers and check in control panel and make sure it is not disabled."

Shu replied: "Why do people cheat at games? Because they can't play them well. Maybe someone is trying to tell you something."

ernie.e replied: "System restore, turn it back to before you played the game."

Tom.Wayes replied: "Hello, you didn't wrote what OS you use. 1) look at your keyboard again and see if there are any keys that mark with audio + or -. it could be that your cheat codes might have lowered your audio Vol to 0. 2) it could be that your monitor Vol is set to "0". try to change that. 3) click on the speaker icon near the clock twice. click "option" and then choose "properties". check that your sound card is the one that written. 4) if you are running Win xp, use the system restore, and bring your computer to the day before you entered the cheat codes."

mlaheji replied: "First of all...restart your computer. If that doesn't solve it, go to Start>Run. Type in "services.msc" and press enter. In the window that opens up, scroll down and click on the service called "Windows Audio". When its selected, look at the left side, there should be a "Start this service", or "Restart this service". Click on that and after its done, try playing a song or something."

Can Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G2 support Linux? I'm thinking about installing Linux on my desktop, but I wanted to make sure that my router was compatible with Linux. So, I went to Linksys' website and they said that the router is compatible with Mac and Windows and nothing about Linux. But, reading some reviews after a quick Google search has some people claiming it works fine on Linux. Is this true? Can I install Linux without any problems?

Colinc replied: "NO router requires any software loaded on the machine. They are totally platform independent. The only thing that is limited by OS is the install CD provided to automatically configure the router. This often fails anyway, especially on Linksys."

acablue replied: "Yes dude Linux works with all IEEE standards, including 802.11a/b/g/n (wireless). You should be less concerned about your router, and more concerned about whether your network card is supported. Usually the kernel will come with the firmware preloaded, but not always..."

Alan Doherty replied: "your router is just another pc on your network, none of your machines need any software to talk to it or each other just a network connection but your pc's network card or wireless card or whatever hardware is used to link/network it to the router{and all other machines} is where you need to check that IT supports any linux, and especially that it supports the flavour of linux you are going to install"

Adrian replied: "Routers are independent on the computer's operating system A Linksys router will work with windows, Linux, Mac OS, or anything else, even if it has no user-based OS at all (like a print server). For the same reason, My linux-based router works just fine with my Windows XP systems...."

Beryl 0.2.1/Ubuntu 9.04 replied: "Unfortunately you do not indicate which Linux distro. you are working with. Here is the Official Ubuntu Wireless Documentation Cards Supported Troubleshooting/Howto/General In the event of your Wifi card being unsupported you can use Ndiswrapper Here is the Official Ubuntu Ndiswrapper Documentation LUg."

M M M replied: "Yes, that router will work fine with Linux. I recently purchased a "Recertified: LINKSYS WRT54G2-RM IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router" from Newegg.com I set it up using the browser interface. I was running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and did all the set up of the router using Ubuntu. That router will work perfectly with Linux."

Need a good file/PDF tagging program for windows XP.? I'm really looking for a PDF file management application like Yep, but for the PC. (Please don't tell me to get a Mac - Work and my wife are PC only) Here is what I'm looking for: - Picasa like navigation (quick thumbs and fast navigation) - Uses Tagging that are ded in the file and not a proprietary database (Like Picasa photo comments) - Files are also accessible to other applications and not kept in a proprietary database I currently use Evernote, but the lack of security in their cloud model scares me since some of these are receipts with sensitive data. Not to mention, Evernote stinks at exporting its data. PLEASE help me. I've been searching and searching for weeks. Does anyone know of an app like this? PS - Forget about Paperport or Docsvault - they stink. It would be a real bonus if someone knows of a total file tagging & management tool Win XP (ie supports other file formats). I've tried Taggtool and TaggedFrog, but they don't the tags to be used in windows or Google desktop searches.

The only think I don't like is that this company hides behind a proxy out of Scottscale, AZ. When one hides behind a "proxy", they don't really want you to know who the owner is.
